Pagosa Springs is a growing community in the southwestern area of Colorado that offers many recreational and historical activities.  Summertime provides warm days and cool nights.  Those who love the outdoors can take advantage of the San Juan National Forest and Weminuche Wilderness.  Included are hiking, biking camping and fishing.  Pagosa Springs is the county seat of Archuleta County.  Pagosa Hot Springs is a popular local resort.

Located approximately 35 miles north of the New Mexico border, Pagosa’s elevation is 7,000 feet on the western slope of the Continental Divide. The combination of high desert plateau and the Rocky Mountains to the north and east creates an unusually mild climate, especially in the summer months, when compared with much of the surrounding area.

San Juan National Forest is a beautiful, almost 2,000,000 acres of publicly owned land on the western slope of the southern Continental Divide.  The terrain is characterized by broad variations in elevation, alpine lakes and meadows, canyons waterfalls, cataracts and unusual geologic formations.  Many historic mines can be found in the forest.  There is trout fishing in the high mountain lakes and campgrounds and picnic areas abound throughout the forest.

Wolf Creek Ski Area is a 1604 vertical drop ski area with a summit elevation of 11,904 feet.  It has 1600 ski-able acres and boasts “the most snow in Colorado” with an average natural snowfall of 465 inches.  The ski season runs from early November until early April.  Wolf Creek Ski area is located in the San Juan/Rio Grande National Forest on Highway 160, Wolf Creek Pass between Pagosa Springs and South Fork CO.

Chimney Rock Archeological Area lies 16 miles west of Pagosa Springs.  Mostly known for the enigmatic ruins left behind by the ancient Anasazi people, there is ongoing investigation as to why these people chose the area for their home and what led them to it.  The ruins are estimated to be at least 2000 yrs old, possibly as old as 3500.

Durango is the county seat of La Plata, CO.  The city was organized in 1880 by the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad to serve the mining area.  Today, the population is around 16,000.  The city lies in the Animas River Valley surrounded by the San Juan Mountains and offers gold medal fly-fishing, white-water rafting, canoeing, kayaking.  Also on the outdoor menu are alpine skiing, hiking, mountain biking, road biking, backpacking, rock climbing, hunting, off-roading, year-round fishing, and golfing.  Durango-La Plata County Airport is serviced by Delta Air Lines, Lynx Aviation (Frontier Airlines), United Express (United Airlines), and US Airways.

Weminuche Wilderness Area is Colorado’s largest wilderness covering more than half a million acres.  Featuring 475 miles of trails and scenery so diversified and magnificent, it could take a lifetime to explore the entire area.  Please visit the website connected to this link for more information.
